Dr Dmitry Sokolov
Dr Dmitry Sokolov is a Consultant Anaesthetist in Glasgow and a lifestyle medicine physician.
Trained in anaesthesia and intensive care in Riga, Dr Sokolov worked as a consultant with the Emergency Medical Service of Latvia before moving to the UK. Since 2013 he has been a Consultant Anaesthetist with NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital, where he leads trauma anaesthesia. He has been on the GMC Specialist Register in anaesthetics since 2010 and has examined for Part 2 of the prestigious European Diploma in Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care since 2016.
Theatre and intensive care show him where much illness begins. Modern medicine brings everything it has to bear – advanced diagnostics, surgery, pharmacology, highly skilled time – yet too many of the conditions it treats stem from how people live. Unless that is addressed, much of this effort works only in part, or not at all. He sees his mission as teaching people to address the root cause – with the lifestyle approaches and tools that give the best return in health and performance.
Dr Sokolov is board-certified in lifestyle medicine by the International Board of Lifestyle Medicine, a Diplomate of the British Society of Lifestyle Medicine, and holds the American College of Lifestyle Medicine’s Type 2 Diabetes Remission Certificate. He interprets cardiopulmonary exercise tests (CPET), body composition (DEXA scan) and advanced blood panels. He writes the Library on this site, teaches organisations and private groups, and delivers structured lifestyle coaching to clients outside the UK.
The method behind his work is Pragmatic Optimalism™: the most benefit for the least effort, chosen by evidence and measured. Real life limits what anyone can give their time to. Time, money and attention are always scarce, and every choice for one thing is a choice against another. Lifestyle is no exception: what is most worth doing is what gives the highest return at a given point, in any given season of life – and the answer changes as life does.
Dr Sokolov lives what he teaches. He trains, keeps his routines on good days and bad, respects people who do the same, and helps those who do not yet live this way make it their new normal. Discipline is often labelled as a cage – something that restricts and takes pleasures away. In his experience it is the opposite: discipline is the frame that holds when moods, losses and circumstances push against it, and keeps a person going whatever life brings. Much of his work is helping others build that frame.
